Abstract:
The 19th century Georgian fi gures were especially attentive to the
state of education. During this period, when among some of the most
painful problems there was an issue of division of the nation, education
was extremely important as one of the fi rst and the most practical ways
of national unifi cation. Only education could break down the spiritualintellectual
or psychological barriers that were preventing diff erent parts
of the Georgian society from uniting together.
From such a perspective the legacies of two prominent fi gures, Ilia
Chavchavadze and Iakob Gogebashvili, stand out, the most important part
of which is contained in their letters concerning education and pedagogy.
In the 19th century Georgia the state of education was quite problematic,
since the imperial government was actively trying to manipulate it to
achieve their long-term goals.
Therefore in the writings of prominent fi gures the importance of the
fact that education should be based on national foundations is emphasized.
This is the basis of pedagogical science in general, and especially in the
initial stages. When sharing initial bits of knowledge the main weapons
should be the national language, history, and the environment the child is
a part of.
One of the most important aspects of education is moral upbringing.
In the words of the great Ilia, this is the cornerstone that strengthens the
basis and completes the essence of true education. “Without this learning
and knowledge are vain treasures” (Ilia Chavchavadze). These essential factors infl uence the depth of education and the
formation of national identity, which holds the ultimate importance in the
shaping of our own future.
