Abstract:
The report attempts to describe the consonant system of western dialect of the
Azerbaijani language throughout Georgia. This research is based on the linguistic
evidence collected from 2011 up to present from individuals spe aking in the Qazakh
dialect of Azerbaijani. Presentation also contains audio materials recorded from the
ethnic Azerbaijanis residing in diff erent districts of Georgia.
The report also highlights the special consonants, which are no longer used or
have never been employed in the literary language of Azerbaijani.
The report also provides a discussion of such consonants that h ave been lost for
a while in literary Azerbaijani language or don’t exist in the modern one. Such is,
for example, nasal η. Dental Ẑ consonant is only characteristic for the dialect under
consideration. Report also off ers discussion of aff ricates dz and ts that are absent in
consonant system of literary language, but are confi rmed in the analyzed dialect. With the help of the program Praat, the sounds were observed on oscillogram
and spectral imaging, because we had to observe these specifi c consonants and the
report will be presented as images.
The study has shown that contemporary consonant system of Qazakh dialect of
Azerbaijani language has maintained sonic signs of Old Turkic language to a significant
extent.
