Abstract:
Athenaios and Appian record about Chians’ deportation to Colchis by
Mithridates VI Eupator, king of Pontus. These notes show the Chian upperclasses
as pro-Roman while Mithridatic Wars; lower classes support the Pontic
king. Perhaps, due to bad economic and demographic situation in Colchis,
practice of colonization was restored. Archaeology confirms that there were still
a lot of uninhabited lands in Colchis.
So, while in Pontic kingdom, Colchis had political and economic
functions, as well as that of place for exile.
