Abstract
Some fifteen years ago, the European Union took an unprecedented, or probably a precedent-setting decision: Asian by its geography and European by its culture and political orientation, Cyprus – or rather one part of the island- was integrated into the European Union: in 2004, the Republic of Cyprus (the so-called Greek part of the island) joined the EU and later the Eurozone. European people, and primarily Cypriots, faced a new reality that brought new challenges. One of them was the Cypriots’ quest for identity, or rather, their aspiration for a new identity status in a totally paradoxical and dramatic situation: they share their national identity with people who have a different state and are likewise an EU member; on the other hand, they share their territory, which is one of the markers of Cyprian identity, with people of a different identity. It is against this challenging landscape that Cyprian cinema has become an identity marker for Cyprus. The new political reality is the same for Cyprus as the aftermath of WWII for Western Germany. Identical realities promote the same processes even among people so different as Germans and Cypriots. A quest for the New Realism has pervaded the cinematography of both countries. Following the EU integration, the reality in Cyprus and its cinema have continued to evolve side by side. Cyprian cinema is fully competent to reflect the country’s collective self without resorting to pseudo-heroism and false pathos, which are inadmissible in cinema. Social and political moves taking place in Cyprus reverberate in films that are imbued with psychologism, dramatism, social criticism and melancholic humour, and have secured a place in world cinema thanks to their original stylistic features.
