Abstract:
Ivane Javakhishvili was well acquainted with the theoretical issues, methodology and philosophy of history. His works belong to the best examples of connecting theory and empirical studies. It is logical that Ivane Javakhishvili was the first scholar who studied the issues of historical methodology in Georgia. The theoretical and methodological technics of Ivane Javakhishvili was not limited to the critical historical-philological method, as it was claimed by the Soviet Georgian historiography, and he was using the other methods of historical research too. Along with the historical comparativistics, he was using retrospective, objectivist, and individualisation methods. The theoretical and methodological thoughts of Ivane Javakhishvili were in line with the requests of historical science in those times. His views can be placed within the scope of positivist historiography. Nevertheless, there are some questions, which need further clarification. First of all, we have to mention the idea of “total objectivity”, which was very popular in historiography from the second half of 19th c.
