Abstract:
In the system of artistic understanding, theological literature or
philosophical doctrines, a name, title, name or nickname of a person
expresses an inner essence and nature of a subject. Naming is
one of the basic means of expressing and perceiving a spiritual and
intellectual world, defining at the same time its essence and consciousness,
and revealing a complex process of shaping its moral
image. Accordingly, a name, a title of a literary work expresses its
core essence. The title of Shota Rustveli’s poem should be discussed
through the prism of general cultural perceptions containing mythological,
folkloric, philosophical, theological and literary perspectives,
within the context of Eastern and Western literatures of that time,
and especially, with the reference to the titles of Nizami’s poems.
The title of the “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin” has not been
viewed from this perspective since it is commonly agreed to be perceived
as a metaphor, enigma, symbol, allegory, allusion. An assumption
is made on the purpose of the title of the poem, comprising a
space-time function, which prompts us to perceive it as a title-story,
which contains information of different range and reveals both the
processes of re-mythologization and de-mythologization of the phenomenon of the process of [one’s] living in tiger’s skin, as offered
by the author. The research found that the title of Shota Rustveli’s
poem differs from those of Eastern and Western literary works of
his time by its essence, artistic reflection and word construction. A
tiger, its skin and rich colors point to the diversity of the world and
of an individual, expressing a spiritual state of a human being in general,
and more specifically, of the protagonists of Rustveli’s poem.
Hence, the literary image of a tiger and living in its skin comprises of
several cultural phenomena but, as Viktor Nozadze mentions, in an
entirely different way than it was done before, thus representing the
reference point of spiritual renewal of the characters of the poem,
respectively, of spiritual renewal of the universe.
