Abstract:
Dimitri Kipiani, a well-known 19th-century public fi gure, took an active
part in the formation of a national school. In the 50s, he was the head of the
Georgian Language Department at the Committee for Compiling Textbooks.
The archives of the given period have preserved his extremely critical
reviews on the ABC textbooks compiled by Vartanov and I. Kereselidze.
By contrast, D. Kipiani’s attitude towards Iacob Gogebashvili’s Mother
Tongue (1876) is quite diff erent; he regards Mother Tongue as the best
textbook. Kipiani’s valuable suggestions were taken into consideration by
the author in the second edition of the book.
