| dc.description.abstract | Saint Giorgi the Eremite, confessor of Saint Giorgi Mtatsmindeli, was one of the characters of Giorgi Mtsire’s hagiographical work (Life of Saint Giorgi from Mtatsminda) and a church figure. Saint Giorgi also was a man who actively contributed to the development of the Georgian literature. He was working in the Black Mountain Monastery from 1020s-1030s until his death in 1068. It was the most powerfull school of theology at that time. We do not have stories about Saint Giorgi the Eremite’s life, but all available information is kept in the literary work of Giorgi Mtsire and in some other works created in the Black Mountain and Athos. Among later sources on Saint Giorgi the Eremite the most important is the work of Anthon I (Katholikos). Until now there has not been any significant research dedicated to the works and activities of Saint Giorgi the Eremite. The attention was paid to the works of Giorgi Mtatsmindeli and to the problematic issues of the Black Mountain literary school. It was the reason why we decided to pay attention in the present article to the activities of Saint Giorgi the Eremite and to show his personality according to the works of Giorgi Mtsire. Saint Giorgi is indirectly related to the creation of several important hagiographic works. Under his order Giorgi Mtatsmindeli wrote about the lives of Ioane and Ekvtime Mtatsmindeli, while Giorgi Mtsire was tasked with the description of George Mtatsmindeli’s life. Thus, it is fair to say that without Saint Giorgi the Eremite, neither Saint Giorgi Mtatsmindeli nor Giorgi Mtsire would have worked on the above-mentioned stories. Quite notable is how Saint Giorgi the Eremite is shown in various hagiographic works. In fact, his character reflects the typical style of hagiography. His spacial area, „cleft in the cliff“, must be explained as a symbol. It means ascetic life of the monk and at the same time, it bears special spiritual meaning for the person. Cleft is the place for spiritual purification from which the ascetic person will be given the way to the heaven. Elene Metreveli during her research about the literary works created at Athos, suggested that Saint Giorgi the Eremite dedicated special hymns to his student Saint Giorgi Mtatsmindeli and with these hymns he completed the hagiographic work of Saint Giorgi Mtsire. Saint Giorgi the Eremite is an important person who left lasting influence on the Georgian culture. He was one of the great personalities in the Georgian history, literature, culture and the church. He is a notable representative of the Georgian literature through „preparing“ two famous writers in the Georgian literature and becoming a great hymnographer himself. | en_US |
