The article discusses the process of reforming state statistics in South Africa since the early 1990s. Institutional deficiencies of state statistics related to political, social, economic, demographic and other factors of the country have been identified. The analysis showed that despite significant regressions in various fields, strong fragmentation of the public is still high in South Africa, which is a negative factor for the development of official statistics. The production of objective and high quality statistical data, their publication and proper use is of great importance for an adequate assessment of this situation.en_US
