dc.description.abstractMuḥammad Abū’l-Qāsim Ibn Ḥawqal al-Naṣībī was a 10th-century Arab geographer who completed his geographical work “Ṣūrat al-’Arḍ” (Picture of the Earth) in 977. This work discusses Tbilisi, where the author was invited to the city of Qadi and Amira. He also visited Sicily, Palermo, where Ibn Haukal felt much more foreign than even in Tbilisi. However, during his visit both of the areas were considered as Dar-al-Islam (territory of Islam). Interestingly, in addition to Ibn Hawqal’s contemporaneous references, of which he was an eyewitness, the edition was done by J. Kramers also included later references, which is considered to be concerned from the period from the twelfth century. The source of these references is one of the later manuscripts of Ibn Hawqal, which, in addition to the references of Ibn Hawqal, contains inserts made later by the copyist. Part of the mentioned information about Tbilisi was translated and published by E. Sikharulidze. However, there are places in the main text that also speak of Georgians/ Georgia and it has not been the object of proper attention till today. Although, these references may clarify or give us a new interpretation of some of the views expressed by E. Sikharulidze or around other references. The information is not extensive and mainly refers to the neighbors of Georgia- Barda and Dvin. The information about Georgia / Georgians discussed in the paper has not been so fully presented so far and is, therefore, a novelty. The purpose of the paper is not to present the full text or references of Ibn Hawqal, but rather of those specific late inserts which were probably added by the copyist in the twelfth century.en_US
