A contemporary Iranian writer Shahrnush Parsipur is an interesting representative of feminine literature. She was kept in Iranian prisons several times: first during the Shah’s regime, later – after the Islamic Revolution. Last time she was detained for having published a book of feministic nature entitled “Women without Men“. After this, the writer had to emigrate. Currently, she lives and works in the USA. In 2005, her novel “Men versus Women“ was published. Based on the title, we can prove that this novel was an attempt of rivalry with “Women without Men“. Interestingly enough, the list of Parsipur’s novels compiled by the author herself does not contain a novel with such title. Instead, the list contains a novel “The Simple and small Adventures of the Spirit of Tree“. This novel was written by Parsipur before the Revolution, but, due to the revolutionary situation, its publication was delayed. The book was published in Sweden in 1999. According to the author, the editor-publisher who issued this book in Iran after the author’s emigration, changed the title and called the book “Men versus Women“. Besides, the publisher extracted and altered many episodes, thus causing irreparable harm to the text. In order to protect her rights, the author published the book abroad, preserving its original, authentic title. Thus, there appeared two versions of a single novel with two titles: the Iranian version with an intriguing title “Men versus Women” and the author’s version under the title “The Simple and small Adventures of the Spirit of Tree“. The original version of the novel – “The Simple and small Adventures of the Spirit of Tree“ – is a boldly written novel that combines the Iranian patriarchal spirit and episodes of contemporary life. The feminist current is felt very strongly. The writer also introduces the topic of sexuality and sexual orientation. Naturally, the version published in Iran was censored and this aspect of the novel was hidden and contracted. In addition to acting deliberately and immorally, based on censorship and his own taste, the Iranian publisher extracted and changed the dialogues and fragments of crucial improtance expressing the main idea of the book. In this way, the publisher violated the copyrights and caused irreparable damage to the nucleus of the book. Thus, we cannot speak of two different novels by Shahrnush Parsipur. There is a single novel called “The Simple and small Adventures of the Spirit of Tree“ and its Iranian parody “Men versus Women“.
