Abstract
Foreign Direct Investment acquired an important role in the international economy in the second half of the twentieth century. In order to study and analyze investments, it is necessary to know the main motives that determine companies' decisions to invest abroad or enter the international market through export; Decisions about which country and which sector to invest in are also interesting. The article discusses several theories that have been developed to characterize and explain foreign direct investment. The theories related to investments are divided into two groups: 1. Theories Assuming Perfect Markets and 2. Theories Based on Imperfect Markets. Each brings its own new element to the literature and, at the same time, criticizes the previous theory. Although these theories have different approaches, they all agree that a company moves abroad to obtain increased benefits in various ways.
