Abstract:
The paper refers to the face and role of a woman in a society in the
case of one of the most interesting regions of Georgia - Guria, based on
historical and modern ethnographic material. The cultural and moral
status of a woman in society, which is fairly defined according to family
and social status.
The explanation and characterization of these circumstances begins,
first of all, with the condition of a woman and her social nature on
the example of the family, otherwise, neglecting her rights and responsibilities
we cannot create a complete picture of Guria society, as its development
was different in the wake of transformation, this situation
became noticeable and remarkable from the tribal community. While at
the time of the formation of the society, during the existence of the matriarchal
society, the priority was on the female side, the patriarchal society
was characterized by the restriction of her rights and the increase of
the rights and duties of a man. The study of the status of women in the
pre-revolutionary period focused on the following factors: the social
origin, age and status of women. It should be noted that the marital and
social status of high-ranking women was markedly different from that
of low-income women.
The paper thoroughly discusses the development of Gurian woman
according to the periodicals and presents in all aspects their activities in
the development of spiritual or material culture, starting with their role
in the family atmosphere: that of mother, daughter-in-law , wife, as well
as well as by determining her material condition before getting married
– by giving a dowry, which was determined by her social origin, this
meant giving a dowry, taking into account all the details from her family property, these factors were evident in nineteenth-century Guria,
which was also compounded by the rather high-quality development of
the culture of dress. Gurian women did not lag behind the women of
any region and even of other countries in dressing nicely or in consuming
various accessories at all, in tasteful clothes, in the use of clothes
made of fabric textiles, which were sewn by apprentices trained by
“Fashionists” and many other details ...
In conclusion, we must say that, in Guria, the role of a woman as a
person in the family and society was interesting, her direct duty was to
create offspring for the family, raise a child in the family, distribute the
family farm and appear in society, Georgian inheritance law also gave
women the right to establish themselves, but the more passive the Gurian
woman was in public relations, the greater and more defined her role
was in family life.
In general, the ethnographic material characteristic of a Gurian woman
is voluminous, the carefree and cheerful general character of a Gurian
woman was reflected in the creation of the flair of the Guria region.
