Abstract
The food industry plays an important role in the development of the Georgian economy. Transition to market systems has brought new challenges to food industry. The article examines developing trends of food industry in Georgia. Prior to the transition to a market economy, the industry was dominated by large companies. According to National Statistics of Georgia SMEs play the most important role in food industry. In 2017, 96% of enterprises were small-size companies, 2.8% of enterprises – medium size companies, and 1.2% of enterprises were large-size companies. The most SMEs have been concentrated in Tbilisi. The villages have been becoming unpopulated while there is an opportunity to bound effective labor force and youth in the regions through development of food industry.
