Abstract
The article discusses Grigol Robakidze’s German-language novel “The Murdered Soul” and its Georgian translation by Alexander Kartozia. The novel was very popular because it was one of the first literary works about the Soviet reality. In the novel “The Murdered Soul”, the writer portrayed totalitarian reality. Moreover, Stalin’s repressions were predicted in it, which killed a lot of people. In the German-language novel of Gr. Robakidze modern tendencies appear with less sharpness than in his other works, although the author’s perception of the world remains unchanged. Comparison of translated material with Gr. Robakidze’s works written in Georgian language revealed the following: Robakidze’s style is rather heavy; the translation is made in simple modern Georgian language and follows the German original, which is simple and clear. The translator feels the rhythm of the writer, who transmits the inner, spiritual experiences of the hero in the dynamics and in such a verbal material that the use of other lexical units seems to be difficult.
