Abstract
Despite the fact that the issue of migration and migration policy has always played its part in the human history, when it comes to its theoretical exploration, the first to do so was German geographer and cartographer Ernest Georg Ravenstein in his 1885 lecture „The Laws of Migration”. Many researchers and academics from various fields have since them attempted to theoretically explain and describe the motives for and the flows of migration, however a satisfactory comprehensive theory, which would cover all aspects of migration, remains yet to be developed. As this paper demonstrates, there is a multitude of theoretical models (often quite independent of each other) but no generally inclusive theoretical concept. The existence of different models can be explained by the internal diversity of motives for international migration and by the interpersonal nature of this issue’s exploration.
