Collation of the facts proves that in the first centuries A.D. Iberia was quite a powerful state, the interests of which had to be considered even by the Roman Emperors. Iberia was Rome’s ally. Both countries, due to their interests had their own reasons for the alliance. The Iberian kings conducted a flexible foreign policy. Written sources along with the artefacts uncovered in Georgia lately point to the height of the relationship between Kartli’s ruling circles and the Roman world in 1th-3rd centuries. The given fact finds its reflection in the objects discovered in tomb №14 in Svetitskhoveli. The work is a thorough study of the pieces discovered in a rich tomb by the north-east wall of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (tomb №14, dated by 3rd c. A.D.): 1. Golden coin pendants with the images of Faustina Junior and Lucilla; 2. Gold pendant, chalcedon bust with the woman’s image, placed in an oval frame and adorned with the golden spiry necklace, the woman is clad in a wrinkled chiton (?); 3. Golden pendant (two pieces), portrait busts of the children, placed in a frame with the hanger. The mentioned materials are analyzed within historical framework. Pieces uncovered in the tomb №14 in Mtskheta are closely linked to the Roman Flavian and Antonine imperial names. The gold coin pendants bearing the images of Faustina Minor and Lucilla are, in our opinion, pendant-medallions, which used to be awarded as the prize by the Emperor to the Legionnaires for outstanding military achievements or to the trusted officials for faithful services. “Queen Ulpia” had to be closely related to the Emperor, due to which she was given two pendant-medalions for certain merits. The medallions had to be crafted before 182/3 A.D. (Lucilla’s death). Cameo pendants, to be more precise, sculpture pendants (three sculptures of the women and two of the children) could be regarded as pieces of art. Figurines of similar shape are scarcely encountered in the world. Similar busts were used to adorn golden crowns, and were usually inserted into medallions. Relatively bigger ones were attached to the banners of the Roman legions. Taking into account the style and shape of the image it could be concluded that the lady portrayed on the miniature sculpture – pendant – may be a representative of the Flavian or Ulpian imperial name. The children‘s plastic art samples (two pieces) probably are not the figurines of “Cupids”. In our opinion they are the deceased children of the imperial family (they may be Lucilla’s deceased children Aurelia Lucilla and Lucius Verus the Younger).en_US
