Abstract
“Neither memory nor history is considered objective anymore. This is the possibility of conscious or unconscious selection, interpretation, distortion of information, which is socially conditioned”. This view of Pitter Burke very clearly defines the relationship with history, with the past, with memory. The main topic of our paper is memory and other related issues. Pierre Nora proves the existence of the roots of memory in reality – in gestures, expressions and objects, and so on. Sh. A French historian calls them “places of memory.” He views the emergence of “memory sites” as a non-spontaneous event. He believes that modern memory is, above all, archival. It is based on the material world – accurate records, visual material, which is the result of the development of modern technology. Our specific interest is to understand one of the most important events in the recent history of Georgia – the Civil War, through the functional areas of memory. In this regard, we have tried to identify and analyze the “places of memory” of the civil war, specifically the television space. The perception of the past and the formation of memory are significantly dependent on the political conjuncture and therefore change over time. It is also important that “the memory of the past defines the present identity.” The television space is the “meaning industry”, the memory space where narratives focus on giving meaning to shared experiences. TV shows allow us to watch the creation of narratives. The role of the media in the political life of the society is great, it can influence the political life and taste of the society, as well as it is a source of education and entertainment, information. The media play an important role in shaping, functioning and developing public awareness. Moreover, the perception and cognition of the developments in our country is mainly carried out through the mass media, and can also manipulate the formation of public opinion. We have reviewed TV programs that allow us to watch the development of narratives related to the “Civil War”. The TV space is the functional area of memory where information and interpretations related to the subject are stored. The TV space, as one of the media outlets, kept important and, at the same time, controversial issues related to the civil war, such as: naming the event: “Civil War”, “Military Coup”, “Putsch”, “Continuation of Russian Occupation”, “Uprising”, “Original War “..., the identity of the initiator of the war, righteous and false, guilty and victim, victorious and defeated, “we” and “they”, etc. It reflected the attitude of the Georgian society of that time (and not only) towards these issues. From the documentaries, we have reviewed and the narratives of the guests of the TV shows, it is difficult to say that a dominant narrative has emerged in connection with the events of 1991-93, which is universally recognized and shared by all groups in society. After all, the goal of the dominant narrative is to create a prevailing and universally accepted opinion about a historical event. However, the attempt to do so is called the victorious side that was in power. After the expulsion of Z. Gamsakhurdia, the government starts assessing the incident and tries to create a so-called Dominant Narrative. He begins to formulate his narrative on one of the most important dates, which was, to some extent, related to modernity, as far as the name of Gamsakhurdia was associated with the general public, it was almost associated with him. It was also an important pillar of national consciousness. Also, the attitude towards April 9 is important, as the Parliament of Georgia declared April 9 as the Day of the Dead for National Unity, Civil Consent and Homeland. The TV production we selected for the study of this issue reflects the construction of narratives related to the “Civil War” with its mood, positions, interrelationships of events and social context. It should be noted that due to the current political situation, the public discussions of these events began quite late. If we look at the material available on Georgian television and the Internet, which documents the current events, the opposing parties, the social and political environment of the time, we have the opportunity to follow the formation of their narratives by the parties. Both sides try to defend the correctness of their positions/actions. In the material, we have studied what reflects the ongoing process. Based on it, it is clear that the parties are right in their own right, which is then reflected in various discourses. Both President Gamsakhurdia and his supporters, as well as the party in conflict with them, were well aware of the power of the media and tried to use it to create their versions. Georgian TV space is a place of memory, a kind of functional area where the current events in Georgia in 1991-93 are accumulated – facts, interpretations, narratives, discourse.
