Abstract
Historical friendship between Georgia and Azerbaijan has centuries old
history. Especially close relations between them were revealed in the 19th
century when in the epoch of the Russian tsarist rule the administrative
centre of the Transcaucasia was located in Tbilisi where the best representatives
of intelligentsia with different national backgrounds gathered. To
them belong Mirza Fatali Akhundzade (1812-1878) the founder of critical
realism, democrat, enlightener and public man; creator of the first dramatic
works in the Azerbaijani language and founder of the Azerbaijani theatre.
The comedies by Mirza Fatali (prior to their publication as a collection)
appeared in Tbilisi on the pages of the official newspaper “Kavkaz” in 1853
(#7, 8, 9, 30, 31, 32). Here was also published his last play “The Barristers”
(1856 #93, 94, 95, 96).
Akaki Tsereteli was the first among Georgian writers who paid attention
to the Azerbaijani literature and translated into Georgian Mirza Fatali
Akhundzade’s famous play – The Adventure of wazir Lankaran khanate which
was published in Akaki’ journal – “Krebuli” (1898, #7, p.13-53).
The translation done by Akaki Tsereteli is interesting and important in
many respects. In the translation we can find the elements characteristic to
Georgian reality, the influence of Georgian literary tradition and culture in
spite of the fact that Akaki preserved the wit, irony and courage of the
original.
