    Assessing the role of classical heritage in the development of modern civilization is quite complex issue. In any field of this heritage, one can discover ideas that have profoundly influenced the spiritual and material cultures of all subsequent eras. Several key phases of returning to classical heritage have been identified in the history of European civilization (e.g., the Carolingian era, the Ottonian period, the Renaissance), which have been the focus of numerous studies. However, no less significant is the transition between the 20th and 21st centuries, which has already become the vanguard of global cultural practice. This continuous dominance of classical heritage has necessitated its fundamental study on a global scale. Although such research began during the Hellenistic period, scientific reflection and the formation of distinct disciplines addressing the interplay of epochs and cultures in the context of classical heritage became feasible only at the end of the last century. This shift emerged as new paradigms of interpreting classical civilization began to take shape in the humanities, linking it to historical consciousness, symbolic representations, values, and more. In Western European and American cultural studies, the relationship between antiquity and subsequent eras has been defined by the term "reception." While various attempts have been made throughout history to interpret and comprehend the achievements of the ancient world and its phenomena, the initial focus was primarily on literary studies. These relied on hermeneutical and textual analysis principles rooted in classical philology, philosophy, and historiography. However, in recent times, reception studies have expanded their scope and aimed to uncover models of reception through corresponding methodological investigations. Since the 1960s, the study of the receptions of antiquity has become one of the primary directions not only in European but also in global literary studies. The research directions have become so diverse that it became necessary to establish a specialized journal dedicated to the comprehensive exploration of classical receptions. Such a journal is the Classical Receptions Journal , published since 2009 in Oxford, covering "all aspects of the reception of the material culture and texts of ancient Greece and Rome in both antiquity and the modern world." Fundamental research on classical heritage has highlighted one particularly intriguing aspect among the major problems of understanding antiquity. This aspect revolves around the question: "Does time change while antiquity remains the same, or does antiquity change from generation to generation, from researcher to researcher?"1251 Indeed, the approach to antiquity and, consequently, to existing studies on it, is constantly evolving. Not so long ago, the study of antiquity was confined to a certain framework that did not consider concepts like subjectivism, individuality, reception theory, gender, and others, which are extensively utilized by authors of modern studies. Thanks to these advancements, it has become possible not only to broaden the boundaries of understanding antiquity but also to showcase and integrate national literatures into the process of global cultural development. Thus, reception studies serve as the foundation for a continuous dialogue between the past and the present and, more importantly, for intercultural communication. This is particularly evident in literature, both prose and poetry. Writers and poets of post-antique eras often discovered in ancient authors texts that significantly resonated with the tendencies of their time. These 'discoveries' varied from epoch to epoch. This was the case in medieval Europe, where the popularity of Roman authors depended on the trends of the era. In a moralized world (e.g., the Ottonian period), Horace was embraced for his sententious poetry; later (in the Age of Novelties), when secular interests began to awaken, Ovid became more prominent, and the epoch was even named after him ('Ovidian'). Intercultural communication involves not only the dialogue between antiquity and modernity but also an understanding of their relationship in an intertextual space. Here, it is crucial to expand reception studies, which are considered significant phenomena for incorporating national literatures into models influenced not only by European but also by Eastern and, more broadly, global literary processes. From this perspective, the study of the reception of classical heritage in Georgian literature, which shares the longest history with antiquity among European literatures, holds particular importance. This significance is mutually determined: ๏‚ท On the one hand, Georgian literature, with its centuries-long connection to the ancient world, has been at the forefront of both Western and Eastern literary processes throughout its development. This is reflected in its diverse creations of both spiritual and secular character, some of which are recognized as masterpieces of world classics. Thus, it should be considered an inseparable part of the model of receptions. A testament to this is the fact that in one of the most renowned fundamental encyclopedias on antiquity, Der Neue Paulyโ€”five volumes of which are dedicated to the reflection of ancient tradition in world literatureโ€”there is an article on classical heritage in Georgian literature (authored by Rismag Gordeziani).1252 ๏‚ท On the other hand, Georgian literature, reflected with all its diversity in the model of receptions, due to its invaluable heights and its Western-Eastern discourse, secures a worthy place in the literary world. It should be noted that in individual national literatures, monographic studies on the reception of antiquity have existed for quite some time.1253 These have formed the basis of socalled reception models created with consideration of global literary processes. As for Georgian literature, although individual articles and studies on this topic were written until recently, they did not possess a systematic, monographic nature that would comprehensively reflect the traces of classical tradition in Georgian literature. The monograph "Classical Antiquity in Georgian Literature" is a fundamental, bilingual (Georgian-English) work, which, for the first time on such a scale, presents the receptions of antiquity in Georgian artistic literature across all stages of its development. The authors of the monograph compiled all existing studies on various authors and had access to the bilingual materials of the project "Classical Tradition in Georgian Literature,"1254 which includes information about approximately 140 Georgian writers and poets, significant passages reflecting the reception of antiquity, and accompanying commentary. In many cases, the monograph includes the authors' own observations, perspectives, and findings, which are being published for the first time in this work. Particularly notable is that, for some authors whose works exhibit significant traces of antiquity, no prior studies had been conducted, adding an innovative dimension to the monograph. The authors' systematic research into antiquity in Georgian literature provided solid evidence, based on specific data, for the viewpoint that Greco-Roman elements are present in every period of Georgian literature. This demonstrates that antiquity plays a significant role in Georgian literary tradition. This trend begins in the 8th century. Evidence of antiquity is already found in hymnography, though the historical figures appearing in these works are primarily connected to Christianity. Interestingly, mythological characters appear in hymnography only after the emergence of secular literature (e.g., Orpheus, Achilles, Mount Olympus, etc.). In secular literature, as expected, the range of mythological material used is significantly broader compared to religious literature. It is noteworthy that Georgian literature employs antiquity in various contextsโ€”both within Greek-Roman and Georgian narratives. These terms often serve as striking examples of artistic generalization. Based on this, numerous comparisons, epithets, and metaphors emerge, alongside instances of antiquity's reception. This important aspect of classical heritage in Georgian literature is represented both as symbols that became clichรฉs within antiquity itself and as entirely new, original forms of artistic reinterpretation. Observations reveal that significant passages related to antiquity are reflected in Georgian literature with great diversity and originality, allowing us to conclude that this material was integrated into narratives and that ancient ideas were incorporated not fragmentarily but rather comprehensively into the artistic imagery developed by Georgian literature. It is evident that this trend intensified significantly during the 11thโ€“13th centuries, a period of political and cultural prosperity in Georgian history, which opened the door for the influx of Western ideas and values into Georgian society. A new wave of engagement with antiquity can be observed from the 17thโ€“18th centuries, continuing with particular intensity through the 19thโ€“21st centuries. During this time, numerous adaptations and receptions of antiquity were created in Georgian literature, following European literary trends, which, in turn, necessitate constant renewal of research. Notably, characters associated with the ancient world, which constitute a significant part of pan-European artistic symbols, have gradually become a distinct and integral part of the so-called "bank" of Georgian artistic imagery. This highlights the traditional and organic strengthening of the so-called Western element in contemporary Georgian literature.

The book considers the basics of creation of heraldics and the evolutionary route of its development in western Europe; retracing the analysis of common or distinctive features of secular and clerical heraldics, the seals of Georgian Catholicoses have been studied as artifacts with heraldic features and a conclusion has been reached, stating that the first features of Georgian heraldics appeared on the seals of the clergy. Several important milestone artifacts have been selected from the heraldic heritage and a generalized conclusion was drawn regarding the appearance and reasons of the development of heraldry in Georgia, its role and importance in the development of Georgian culture and statehood. The Role of Romanian theologian Anthim the Iberian in the creation of the Bagrationi Coat of Arms has been presented in the book from a new, different angle. In this regard, a sphere of work of Anthim the Iberian, such as heraldry, has been studied and introduced into the Georgian scientific literature. After the analysis of the samples of the Georgian coats of arms a conclusion has been made regarding the Georgian artifacts created as a result of merging and influence of European and Georgian cultures. As a result of the analysis of introduction and removal of the robe symbolic within the chronological frame of reference, the ideological basis, stated (claimed) by the respective institutions of heraldry of the Russian Empire, in this particular case, have been considered. The coats of arms of the first Georgian University and the Georgian Patriarchy have been studied for the first time in Georgian historiography. The Development of Heraldics in Europe is divided into five periods. Similar periodization is based upon the historic-cultural processes that have been taking place in Europe. Georgian science refers to three main stages of heraldry development.Naturally, the stages of development of Georgian heraldics do not coincide with the European. Crests appeared here after having gone through three evolutionary periods in Europe. Although, on the one side, it is still possible to draw parrallels between the first period of Georgian heraldics and II and III periods of European heraldics, on the other. In coats of arms created in Georgia at that time religious themes stand out and symbolic allegorical features become prominent. It is a well adapted form of expression of the state politics and worldview of the Georgian public of the period, effectively reflecting the aspiration of the `Minor Renaissance~ epoch in Georgia. The first period of heraldry developed, undoubtedly, in close connection with the European culture. An attempt to introduce and establish the `noble art~ of heraldry is a minor but important nuance in the history of Georgian-European relationship. Still, the periods of development of heraldry in Georgia were based on the issue of state independence and not on the cultural-artistic style. The existing periodization is based upon the analysis of the origination of Georgian Coats of Arms, although from the beginning of XXI century, the art of coats of arms began to develop so intensively (namely, in the military sphere and territorial-administrative entities) that it would be expedient to add the fourth, post Soviet, stage to the periodization of the Georgian heraldry development. The independent stage of development of heraldry in Georgia was so short that the gradation of heraldry display methods was missed. Georgian culture received ready heraldry clichรฉs from Europe. Coats of arms created in the period of independence are not characterized by the excess of figures. While tracing the heraldry common rules, the distinction of these norms from country to country points to the fact that the national models of heraldry, used to be created on the basis of culture and history of a particular nation, a thorough study of which is practically impossible without the consideration of the national heraldry. Major works of the Georgian heraldry rest upon a cultural-worldview basis. As it is known, the creation of heraldry is linked with the development and merging of three ideas. Initially, only simple private bearing of individual features or symbols came to existence. Later, an idea of decorative marking of the property appeared, which was realized by means of a seal, hallmark. Finally, finding means of personal identification and presentability of the warriors became necessary, when armour made it impossible to recognize them. Heraldics, which derived from the merging of these three cultural-domestic streams, got symbols and emblems from them and incorporated into a scientific system. Georgian heraldry has not gone through similar development stages. It, being on a certain step of development, appeared in Georgia, turning into an interesting part of the Georgian culture. The introduction of the coat of arms, as a cultural phenomenon, and gaining foothold is linked with the Christian religion, events taking place in the Georgian Church, attempts at the restoration of the disintegrated state, cultural growth and the world view layers, which determine and follow the abovementioned processes. The consideration of the important artifacts, created by the Georgian heraldry, allows us to express the view that the development of heraldry in Georgia, on one hand, is connected with the inflow of European culture, restoration of severed ties with the European countries and, on the other hand, with the Christian religious institutions. At various stages of development the principal basis for the creation of the Georgian heraldic works was the cultural-worldview background characteristic of the relevant epoch.

    Anthimoz Iverieli (Antim Ivireanul) was the Metropolitan of Romania from 1708 till 1716. The heraldry of Iverieli marks an important interest in his life. His coat of arms is depicted in the "Statutes of Atim Monastery" which dates to 1713. The coat of arms has a stylized German simple shield which is red, with a snail on it. In the cultures of ancient peoples, a snail used to be the symbol of the moon and fertility. Owing to its spiral shell and its tentacles, which show from time to time, it also symbolizes cyclic processes such as renaissance and resurrection. It also symbolizes Christ's resurrection. A snail on the branches of a tree is a symbol of obstinacy, and perseverance - even if the progress is persued slowly- to the end. A crawling snail stands for carefulness and shrewdness. Aesthetically a snail attracts attention by its exceptional beauty and the harmony of its spiral house. According to W. Cecil Wade's dictionary of heraldic symbols, the shell of a snail symbolizes protection by providence. The snail on Anthimoz Iverieli's coat of arms is depicted vertically, with its head approaching a six-axis star, and almost touching it with its tentacles. A star is one of the most ancient symbols of the mankind. It used to embody eternity from the very start. On Anthimoz Iverieli's coat of arms the biblical six-axis star of Bethlehem, the symbol of Messiah, light, the hope and the faith of the mankind is depicted. Scholars have no doubt that the coat of arms was created by Iverieli himself. Above the shield there is the Metropolitan's mitre. This kind of mitre can be seen on the coat of arms of Mogila, the Metropolitan of Kiev in 1639 and of Nikon, Patriarch of Russia in 1659. This tradition is continued in the church heraldry of modern Romania and Russian. Images of mitre adorn the octagonal stamp of the Cathalokos of Georgia Domenti and the oval stamp of the Cathalikos of Georgia, Bessarion. On the reverse side of the shield of Anthimoz Iverieli's coat of arms there is a cross and a crozier crossing each other. It is remarkable that exactly the same image is common for the Georgian stamps too (17th-18th cc). The similar cross and double-headed crozier is reflected on the coats of arms of the Metropolitan of Kiev - Peter Mogila, Patriarch of Russia - Nikon, the metropolitans and bishops of Romania. On top of the crown there is a hat with two lances and two brushes. A similar hat is on the coat of arms of Petre Mogila as well. According to A. Lakier, the famous Russian specialist of heraldry, this hat is Moldavian. The coat of arms has one more element, a palm-tree crown. It frames the sides and the lower part of the shield, and this decorative element is also given in Anthimoz Iverieli's other works. At the bottom of the coat of arms there is a motto: "Let every soul praise the Lord, says the prophet, and the snail rises up its horns, thus teaching us all to praise the Lord."

Greek and Latin Inscriptions from Classical Antiquity represent very important source of Georgian History. If not them, history of Kartli/Iberia would have been based only on later Georgian or contemporary Greek and Roman narrative sources and this is not sufficient. On the other hand, history of western Georgia (Colchis), as a result of denunciation of western Georgian historical memory, is based mostly on Greek and Roman narrative, epigraphic and numismatic material. The book intends to bring in fresh interpretations on well-known Greek and Latin inscriptions and also introduce some new ones to scientific community. The book is intended for scholars, also for the wider audience interested in history of Georgia and in Greek and Latin epigraphy as well.
